Product insights

FilmCraft at a glance

Value proposition

Premiere-style editing, color, audio, and export at no cost, on every desktop platform, with hooks that let AI agents do the cutting.

Problem solved

Professional editors like Premiere Pro need a paid subscription, and most editors give AI tools no clean way to drive the timeline.

Audience

Video editors and YouTubers who know Premiere, students, Linux users, and developers building AI agents that edit video.

Pricing and access

Free and open source, dual-licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0.

Market

  • Open source on GitHub (storytold/filmcraft), currently in alpha
  • Part of the ArtCraft "Crafting Apps" family alongside CADCraft

Tech stack

  • Pure Rust, with a WebAssembly web build
  • wgpu GPU compositor on Metal, Vulkan, DirectX 12, and WebGPU
  • In-house H.264, HEVC, ProRes, AV1, VP9, AAC, and Opus codecs
  • 650+ engine commands exposed through an MCP server and JSON control channel

How to use FilmCraft

  1. 01

    Download FilmCraft

Get it from the FilmCraft page on getartcraft.com, or from GitHub releases: MSI or ZIP for Windows, DMG for macOS, and AppImage, Flatpak, deb, or rpm for Linux. Developers can build it with cargo run --release -p filmcraft.

  2. 02

    Import footage and cut

Import clips, build a sequence, and edit with the same panels and shortcuts you know from Premiere, including ripple, roll, slip, and slide trims.

  3. 03

    Grade, mix, and export

Color grade in the Lumetri-style panel, add titles and captions, check loudness, then export to H.264 MP4, ProRes, or DNxHR, or hand the timeline off as XML or OTIO.
